Nell Phillips

Nell Phillips is a self taught photographer. At 95 years of age, she has created a collection of approximately 7,000 slides dating from the early 1950s, as well as abundant photographic prints. In the past many of her photographs have appeared in the Drain Enterprise, including some that are in this exhibit.

Nell is a long time resident of Yoncalla and the surrounding area. Her husband, Herschel was mayor of Yoncalla for two terms in the 1950s. Herschel and his brother Wayne were partners in the Two Brothers Lumber Company. They ran their operation in the Yoncalla area for several years and later moved the company to Whittier Alaska. Wayne and family moved to Anchorage, while Nell and Herschel split their year between Whittier and Yoncalla. Thus it was that Nell had the opportunity to extensively photograph Whittier and Anchorage, both before and after the Good Friday earthquake.
